Broadband is a word we use when we talk about any kind of fast Internet connection..
The chances are you already have an Internet connection and want to upgrade, or you're setting up an home Internet connection for the first time.
If you already have an home Internet connection, you probably connect to the Internet with a modem, supplied by your broadband supplier that plugs into your telephone line (often referred to as a "dial-up connection"). And you're probably no longer satisfied with the performance it offers and would like to increase you speed.
If you're setting up a home Internet connection for the first time, it really makes sense to go for fast Broadband right from the start, as the entry-level packages are generally much better value than the dial-up alternative.
A broadband connection is not all that different from a dial-up connection. The equipment is similar - you will need to change your modem, but still a modem, and in most cases the connection is still made through your telephone line.
The main difference is that you will have an Internet connection or broadband connection that is always on, 24 hours a day. Normally you pay a flat monthly fee, no matter how often you use the Internet. And of course a broadband connection is much faster than dial-up.
Your broadband connection will allow you to:
- Watch streaming video clips and listen to music in real time, including live broadcasts.
- Download music or mp3s, software, film trailers or movies and other files much more quickly.
- Play games online.
- Do everything you could do before, but at up to 10-20 times faster!
Is it hard to install...?
No not at all! All you need to do is sign up with an Internet Service Provider (or 'ISP'). The ISP will supply you with your home Broadband connection. If you already have an ISP or provider shop around by using our Comparison Site information below
other companies might offer you a much better deal if you spend just a few minutes comparing them. If you are signing up for a broadband contract, most ISPs will arrange a date to connect you up and supply you with everything you need to get started.
As well as sorting out your connection, most ISPs will send by post a CD. Just put this into your computer and follow the step-by-step instructions. Some companies even offer a home installation service and will send over an engineer to set up your Broadband connection and answer any question you may have concerning you new high speed broadband connection.
