Richard Stone is a 35-year old IT Consultant from Richmond. He has managed to get on the property ladder in recent years and as a mortgage, but he hopes to upgrade from his one-bed roomed flat to a larger 2-3 bedroom property sometime over the next few years.

On the personal finance front Richard as the following. Although he has around £7,000 in cash in his bank account and  savings account, and is putting an extra £200 away each month, he is concerned that he is not getting a good deal on his interest rate. He is a member of his company savings scheme, but does not contribute. He has compare bank account deals but finds that understanding the true interest rate he would receive is not a clear cut as first thought. So he is taking stock of all the bank accounts, savings accounts, credit cards and loans as written out all his outgoings.

Richard has quite a relaxed approach to investment risk, and wonders whether he could be making his savings work harder. But he also wants to have some fun and to make sure he always has enough savings which are easily accessible in the event of unexpected bills.. Once you take into account such things as life insurance, home insurance, loans, car insurance, credit card and loan repayments there is not much left for Richard.

Finance Case for Richard
Salary: £4,100 per month
Mortgage: £183,000  - monthly repayments are £1100
Bank Account: £2500 on average
Savings account: £4,000 in an HSBC
Expenses: £900 on other bills such as gas and electricity, insurance and living expenses, £200 on savings, £550 on entertainment

We asked three personal finance specialists to look at Richards position:

Mortgage

Richard has a mortgage with Abbey, fixed for three years at a rate of 5.15 per cent, which is a very competitive mortgage deal given that the Bank of England base rate is currently around 6 per cent, and may go higher in future months. While over the longer term it would make sense for Richard to make overpayments on his mortgage, to help reduce his personal finance debt quicker, he should probably hold off for the next two to three years because his mortgage rate is so good. Richard can make a little more than 5.15 per cent in a good cash ISA, it would make more sense to focus on his credit cards, loans and savings until his fixed rate mortgage deal expires.

Savings

Richard is not saving enough money to meet his current financial objectives, and suggests that he increase the amount he puts away each month from £200 to £325 or even £350. Disciplined budgeting will be the key, perhaps cutting down on his entertainment and holiday expenditure, getting rid of unnecessary loans and credit cards, searching for best deals on bank accounts and loans, or by trying to reduce his basic living costs.

Richard makes his personal finance savings more tax-efficient by making full use of his ISA limits each year. Richard can save up to £3,000 a year in a cash ISA, also he can save a further £4,000 a year in a stocks and shares ISA.

As well Richard continuing to pay into his cash ISA, he should start making regular monthly payments into a stock ISA using a qualified fund supermarket such as Fidelity Funds Network or Co funds. Richard should consider shopping around to get a better rate on his cash ISA. Although his HSBC pays 5.05 per cent, the best rates on the market are now closer to 6 per cent.

If Richard wants to retire at 60 with an income of £2,000 a month, he will need to start saving far more. He estimates that Richard would need a fund of more than £750,000 at retirement to provide such an income. Richard should also check how much he is due from the state pension by using a BR19 form from the Pension Service's website (pension service. gov.uk).

Richard needs to save more money and suggests that he checks whether his employer will help by making a higher contribution if he begins contributing more money to his company pension. However, if his employer will not contribute any more, Richard should probably focus on paying more off his mortgage and building a savings buffer for the time being, given his relatively tight budget.
